China succeeds in landing Zhurong rover on Mars surface

China is the second country after the United States to successfully land a spacecraft on the surface of Mars. According to official media reports, the controlled landing of the six-wheeled Martian rover Zhurong, named after the Chinese mythological god of fire, took about seven years. On May 15, Beijing time, it landed as planned in the southern part of the utopia Planicia, which is a mostly flat area between 25° and 30° north of the Martian equator.

The independent Mars mission Tianwen-1 reached Mars in February and spent three months orbiting the red planet to find a better landing site. Then at 1:00 am on May 15th, Tianwen One launched the Zhurong lander. The lander first uses a heat shield when entering the Martian atmosphere, then uses a parachute when landing near the ground, and finally launches a “reducer” to land safely.

As Tianwen-1 is still in orbit, it will now provide relay communications between Zhurong and the Earth. Attempts to get into orbit or land on Mars are only about half successful. Before Zhurong, the United States deployed eight landers and rover on Mars, including the Perseverance Rover. John Logsdon, an expert on space policy at George Washington University, said: “Putting a spacecraft on the surface of Mars is one of the most difficult missions to explore the Space.” We must congratulate China for its first successful landing.

Next state official media reported that Zhurong is expected to roll from the landing zone to the surface of Mars for scientific research soon. Zhurong possesses six scientific instruments, including cameras for navigation and imaging, underground detection radars and surface magnetic field detectors. Since scientists have long suspected that the Utopian plan is covered by ancient mud flows, the rover will try to study the distribution of water/ice and look for signs of past lives.

The country put the 22-ton core module of the Chinese space station into low-Earth orbit last month. At the end of this month and the beginning of next month, cargo and staff will set off to start operations at the station. Upon completion, it will be the only fully functional space station that will join the International Space Station operated by the United States by 2022.
