Pakistan: Violence erupts over alleged insult of Quran, protesters set fire to police station

Violent protests have started in the Tangi area of ​​Charsadda district, located in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, after the case of alleged insults to the Quran.

Angry protesters stormed the local police station and set the police station on fire.

He said that when the protesters got the news of the arrest, the mob reached the police station and demanded that the arrested person be handed over to them.

According to an eyewitness, rumours of alleged disrespect of the Quran were spreading in the area since Sunday morning and then in the evening, news spread in the area that the person who insulted the Quran had been taken to the police station. After this, a large number of people gathered outside the police station and demanded to hand over the accused.

The eyewitness told that “Slogans continued for this demand at first and then suddenly the crowd erupted and the people also damaged the police station.”

Another eyewitness said that the policemen present at the police station kept trying to control the situation for a long time but the number of angry people was increasing.

It is being told that the policemen, seeing the situation becoming uncontrollable, vacated the police station and escaped.

According to Ali Akbar Mohmand, a local journalist from Charsadda, different rumours are being spread about the alleged disrespect of the Quran. According to one report the incident is of Saturday evening and according to another report the incident is being told on Sunday morning.

However, the police could not stand in front of a large number of people and finally the police had to leave the police station with the arrested accused, although the police have ensured the safety of those arrested.
