Turkey and other nations must still talk to Russia in ending the war, says Kalin

Turkey, together with the other countries, must continue to communicate with Russia in order to assist in the conclusion of Russia’s full-scale military action in Ukraine. On Sunday, the presidential delegate underlined Kyiv’s need for assistance in defending itself.

Turkey, a NATO member, has strong connections with both Russia and Ukraine and has attempted to intervene in the war, which has lasted more than a month.

According to Ibrahim Kalin, Turkey’s presidential spokesperson, “If everyone burns bridges with Russia, then who will talk to them at the ending of the day. Ukrainians need to be supported by every possible means so they can defend themselves. But the case must be heard, one way or the other, so that grievances could be understood if not justified.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has begged the West to provide his country with tanks, planes, and missiles to counter Russian soldiers. The West has retaliated against Russia’s invasion by imposing broad sanctions.

Furthermore, Turkey’s economy, which is already under strain due to a currency crisis in December, is largely reliant on Russian energy, commerce, and tourism. Thousands of Russians have arrived in Turkey since the conflict began (on February 24), perceiving it as a safe refuge from the restrictions.

At the same time, the head of Turkey’s investment agency, Ahmet Burak Daglioglu, informed the conference separately that some Russian firms were transferring their operations to Turkey.

Two superyachts linked to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich have moored in Turkish resorts, according to sources.

As part of their effort to isolate Putin and his supporters over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Western nations have imposed sanctions on Abramovich and several other Russian oligarchs.
