US: Firefight in Arkansas town car show took one life and 27 injured

Two persons got into a firefight during a car show that is part of an annual community event in a tiny southeast Arkansas town, killing one man and injuring 27 others on Sunday, March 20, says authorities.

According to Arkansas State Police Col. Bill Bryant, a person who fled the scene of the Saturday evening shooting has been detained on unrelated charges and is being questioned about the incident in Dumas, a town of about 4,000 people located approximately 90 miles (144 kilometers) southeast of Little Rock.

Along with this, on Sunday, Bryant mentioned in a statement that currently, all we know is that there are the individuals that got in a gunfight.

There were several other children with the people that were injured, including the two that were under the age of 2.

Moreover, the vehicle exhibition is part of a community festival called Hood-Nic, which stands for “neighborhood picnic,” which takes place every spring. The Hood-Nic Foundation’s aim, according to their website, is to “rebuild, reconnect, and react to the needs of our communities’ youngsters.”

However, a bonfire, a basketball competition, musical performances, a teen party, as well as a balloon release were all part of the event, which raised money for scholarships and school supplies.

Meanwhile, the 23-year-old man named Cameron Shaffer of Jacksonville, Arkansas, was dead during the gunfire took place, says Bryant. He further mentioned that the officials did not indicate that he was involved in the incident.

On the day when the incident took place, the Governor of Arkansas named Asa Hutchinson mentioned on Twitter that one of the two suspects was detained and held on unrelated charges.

Furthermore, Hutchinson mentioned, “As the investigation continues, I will examine details to see if any steps could have been taken to prevent this type of tragedy.”
