Chicago: Teen shot in chest near “The Bean” sculpture

United States: In Chicago, a 16-year-old boy was fatally shot near “The Bean” sculpture in downtown Chicago’s Millennium Park, as per the authorities.

The Police officials mentioned that the teen was shot in the chest at around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday nearby the popular tourist attraction. Police have not yet identified the boy.

He was transported to the Lurie Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the police statement.

Moreover, the authorities stated that about two suspects were taken in for the investigation, and around two weapons were recovered.

The officials are working on the case, and the police did not provide any additional details.

In the statement, mayor Lori Lightfoot emphasized, “This senseless loss of life is utterly unacceptable. Tonight, a mother is grief-stricken, mourning the loss of her child and searching for answers.”

Along with this, she outlined the new measures that will be taken place “to help prevent events like this from happening in the future,” adding that the information that details will be shared later.

Her report indicated the young individuals coming to the downtown area, though it did not provide details about how that might be relevant.

In addition, the mayor’s statement included, “We must also have zero tolerance for young people carrying firearms or settling petty disputes with acts of violence. We all must condemn this behaviour in the strongest terms possible.”

Hundreds of protesters had gathered in the park earlier on Saturday as part of nationwide protests over a newly leaked draught ruling implying that the Supreme Court is willing to abolish the constitutional right to abortion. It’s unclear if the adolescent who was shot took part in the protest, which started at 1 p.m. By late afternoon, the crowd had mostly dispersed near the “The Bean” sculpture.

Furthermore, the police officials cleared and closed the doors of the part following the shooting. It is still not clear when it will reopen.
