WHO reports over 80 cases of monkeypox in 12 nations: Reports

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has mentioned that another 50 cases of monkeypox are being investigated, but they have warned that more cases are detected.

As per the health officials, 80 cases have been confirmed in about 12 nations. The infections have been reported in nine European countries along with the United States of America, Canada as well as Australia.

Monkeypox is the most common virus in most of the remote parts of Central and West Africa. According to the UK’s National Health Service, it is a rare viral infection that is mild, and the majority of the people recover in a few weeks after getting infected from it.

Moreover, there is no specific vaccine for monkeypox, but a smallpox jab offers 85 per cent of protection from the time since the two viruses are similar.

Until now, the public health agencies in Europe have confirmed cases in the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Italy and Sweden.

On Friday, the World health organisation mentioned in a statement that the recent outbreaks “are atypical, as they are occurring in non-endemic countries”.

Along with this, it said it was “working with the affected countries and others to expand disease surveillance to find and support people who may be affected”.

Monkeypox may also spread more quickly than it did in the past when the smallpox vaccine was monkeypox.

WHO’s Europe regional director Hans Kluge alerted that, “as we enter the summer season… with mass gatherings, festivals and parties, I am concerned that transmission could accelerate.”

He added to the statement that all but one of the recent cases had no relevant travel history to areas where monkeypox was endemic.

The first case of the virus in the United Kingdom was reported on May 7. The patient had recently visited Nigeria, where they are believed to have caught the virus, before travelling to England, the UK Health Security Agency highlighted.

In addition, there are now 20 cases which have been noticed in the United Kingdom, says the Health Secretary Sajid Javid on Friday.

Meanwhile, the authorities in the United Kingdom stated that they had brought the stocks of the smallpox vaccine and started offering it to those with “higher levels of exposure” to monkeypox.

As per the sources, the Spanish health authorities have also purchased thousands of smallpox jabs to control the virus.

The first case in Australia was detected in a man who fell sick after travelling to the United Kingdom, says the Victorian Department of Health.

Furthermore, in North America, the health authorities in the United States of Massachusetts have confirmed that a man has been affected after recently visiting Canada, the health officials emphasised.
