Chicago: Over 50 people were shot over Memorial Day weekend, says police

Over 50 people in Chicago were shot over Memorial Day weekend, including nine fatally, as per the police officials.

Around half of the shootings have taken place on the city’s West Side, while the downtown area has seen four people shot, as per the authorities. There were around 23 people victims on the South Side of the city.

The overall number of victims had crossed the number of victims by Monday morning for all of 2021’s Memorial Day shootings, when 37 people were shot, inclusive of 3 fatally, as per reports. All in, 51 people were shot during the long holiday weekend.

As per reports, it was the most bloody Memorial Day weekend for the city since 2017, when 45 people were injured, and seven were killed.

Among the fatalities was a man, ageing around 25-year-old, who was shot while on a sidewalk on East 93rd Street Monday evening. Two others were wounded during the shooting. On Monday afternoon, another man, 31, was shot & killed inside a residence on South Green Street.

One shooting resulted in injuring a handful of people on Sunday morning after a fight broke out on the West Side. A 16-year-old girl was fired in the back, and two 21-year-old men, a 21-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man, were also shot as well as injured during the incident. They were taken to local hospitals in serious condition, local media reports.

Chicago was braced for a violent weekend and had rolled out Mayor Lori Lightfoot as well as Police Superintendent David Brown’s holiday safety plan, which adds officers working 21-hour days and cancelled days off to get more officers on the street.
