Chicago, Philadelphia and Los Angeles announces of first monkeypox case

United States: Chicago, Philadelphia and Los Angeles County all made an announcement of their first monkeypox cases on Thursday during the growing concerns about the outbreak in the United States of America.

All of the three locations’ public health departments are currently awaiting final confirmation from the Centres for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) for the presumed cases.

Los Angeles County has declared that “The patient is an adult resident who recently travelled and had shared a close contact to the case. Although the patient is symptomatic, they are also well & are not hospitalized. They are isolated from others,” assuring that the general public’s risk of Monkeypox remains low.

Moreover, the Chicago agency highlighted in its announcement, “The Chicago Department of Public Health & Illinois Department of Public Health, made an announcement today a single presumptive monkeypox case in an adult male Chicago citizen with recent travel history to Europe.”

The Health Department Acute Communicable Disease Program Manager Dana Perella mentioned in the statement, “The threat to Philadelphians from monkeypox is extremely low,” with the health department mentioning that any facts about the patient’s case will remain anonymous to save the privacy of the patient.

Perella added in the statement, “Monkeypox is much less contagious than COVID-19 and is containable, particularly when prompt care is sought for symptoms. A vaccine to control or lessen the severity of illness is available via the CDC for high-risk contacts of persons who are infected with Monkeypox, as is the antiviral therapy for patients with Monkeypox.

I believe that residents and visitors should feel safe to do all the fun things Philadelphia has to offer, with the proper precautions.”

Along with this, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has made the confirmation of monkeypox cases in 10 states so far, not including states that have pending confirmation. The state of Georgia has declared its first CDC confirmed case on Thursday.

In Massachusetts, a man had confirmed the first case of Monkeypox after getting infected while travelling to Canada in the middle of the previous month. That came following several confirmed cases throughout Europe.
