‘I had no idea that I would get accepted into all of them’ says Adirika after getting selected in all Ivy schools

United States: Ashley Adirika, a Florida youngster, has always wished to attend an Ivy League university. So, in late autumn, she applied to not just one but all eight.

Ashley opened eight tabs on her computer on Ivy Day, the fateful spring day when the renowned institutions collectively publish their first-year admission decisions, one for each applicant site. One acceptance letter appeared on the screen. Then there was another. And then there was another.

Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, and Yale were all on her list until she had them all.

For the 17-year-old, whose mother immigrated to the United States from Nigeria three decades ago, it was a bizarre experience. Moreover, Ashley was surrounded by family members that day, including her four siblings, who squealed with joy at each new acceptance letter.

She mentioned, “I just decided to shoot my shot at all of them & see if it would land. And I had no idea that I would get accepted into all of them. On Ivy Day, I remember crying a lot & just being extremely surprised.”

Ashley, who graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School this month, joins an exclusive group: since 2018, each Ivy League school has accepted less than 12 percent of its applications. This year Yale accepted 4.5 percent, Columbia took 3.7 percent, and Harvard accepted just 3.2 percent, the lowest number in the university’s history.

Furthermore, Ashley says she was conflicted between Harvard and Yale, but it all came down to her career aspirations. Her goal is to learn how government works and how policies can help fir economic disparities in communities.

She mentioned, “Before the college application process, Yale was actually my top choice. But when I did further research for what I want to do specifically, which is explorations in policy and social policy and things of that nature, Harvard just had a better program.”
