US grants emergency authorization for using Pfizer, Moderna vaccines in youngest children

United States: The USA Food and Drug Administration allowed emergency authorization on Friday for the usage of Pfizer and Moderna COVID vaccines in the youngest children, the last age group looking for immunization in most of the nation.

The agency authorized the two-dose vaccine of Moderna for children of six months to five years, as well as three doses of Pfizer’s shots for those between six months and four years old.

Food and Drug Administration chief Robert Califf mentioned in the statement, “Many parents, caregivers and clinicians have been waiting for a vaccine for younger children, and this action will help protect those down to six months of age.”

“We expect that the vaccines for younger children will provide protection from the most severe outcomes of Covid-19, such as hospitalization and death.”

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) will also recommend the vaccines before they are put into use, a final green light that will be given after an advisory committee of experts meeting that is expected to be held shortly.

The government of the United States mentioned that as soon as the FDA decision is made, about 10 million doses could immediately be sent all over the nation, followed by millions more in subsequent weeks.

Both vaccines rely on messenger RNA, which gives human cells the genetic material for the coronavirus spike protein so they can produce it on their surfaces and prime the immune system. The system is now regarded as the best Covid vaccination platform.

In trials involving thousands of kids, vaccinations were put to the test. They were discovered to produce comparable amounts of moderate side effects and antibodies as in older age groups.

Pfizer estimated the effectiveness against infection to be at 80%, which was more significant than Moderna’s predictions of 51% and 37% for children between the ages of six months and two years, respectively.
