United States: A 14-year-old boy who was stabbed during a fight inside a subway station on Saturday has died, as per the New York Police Department.
The officers answered a 911 call and discovered the boy on a train platform in a north Harlem subway station with a stab wound to the abdomen, according to the police officials.
Preliminary investigations indicate that “a fight or dispute began on the street and continued into the train station where an altercation occurred,” said Jason Wilcox, the chief of transit for the NYPD.
Moreover, the teen was taken to the hospital, Wilcox mentioned in the statement, where he was pronounced dead about half an hour later. Investigators recovered a knife as well as what appears to be a broomstick from the scene, he highlighted.
The NYPD mentioned on Sunday that they arrested a 15-year-old boy and recommended a murder charge. The police official did not release his name or clarify if he knew the victim. He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon.
It is not clear whether the 15-year-old has a lawyer. He has not been arraigned.
Police are going through video from the scene and talking to witnesses. No other suspects are being sought, Wilcox stated, who urged the individuals with information to come forward.
“Meanwhile, we do not believe this was a random attack,” Wilcox stated. “It is believed that the individuals involved are known to each other.”
Along with this, the officials have placed an increased focus on resident safety and law enforcement response at subways amid an uptick in the city crime, including a mass shooting at a Brooklyn subway station in the month of April.
Furthermore, the city has recorded nearly 38 percent in major crimes this year through July 3 than to a similar period in 2021, as per the statistics released by the NYPD.
Historically, such crime rates are still lower now than in past decades like the 1980s as well as the 1990s.
