San Antonio: Two individuals indicted by jury for tragic tractor accident which claims 50 lives

United States: Two individuals have been indicted by a federal grand jury in San Antonio for the tragic tractor trailer accident that happened on June 27, 2022, which claimed the lives of 50 persons, three young children, and injured ten adults and one minor kid.

In a federal indictment, Homero Zamorano Jr., 46, of Pasadena, Texas, and Christian Martinez, 28, of Palestine, Texas, are accused of conspiring to transport illegal aliens that resulted in death, transporting illegal aliens that resulted in death, conspiring to transport aliens that resulted in serious bodily harm and endangered lives, and transporting illegal aliens that resulted in serious bodily harm and endangered lives.

The maximum punishment for conviction on the counts of conspiracy to transport and transit causing death is either life in prison or the death penalty.

Afterwards, the Attorney General will decide whether to ask for the death sentence. The law is demanding that notification be sent to the court at a reasonable period before trial if the Attorney General decides that the offence’s circumstances warrant a death sentence.

The allegations against the accused for transportation causing serious bodily injury carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in jail. After taking into account the United States of America Sentencing Guidelines and other legal considerations, a federal district court judge will decide on any punishment.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents reacted to the site of a human smuggling incident involving a tractor-trailer and 64 people who were allegedly trying to enter the country illegally on June 27, 2022. The officers from the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) informed HSI agents that they arrived at the tractor trailer’s location in southwest San Antonio following 911 calls from worried residents.

Numerous people were found at the scene, some of whom were still inside the tractor-trailer, some of whom were on the ground and in the neighbouring brush, many of whom were dead, and others who were disabled.

A guy, subsequently identified as Zamorano, was seen hiding in the underbrush after making an effort to flee, and SAPD police were directed to his position. Officers from SAPD apprehended Zamorano.
