Florida: Over 300 Haitians migrants discovered on a wooden sailboat grounded near Key Largo

United States: Over 300 Haitians were found on a dilapidated wooden sailboat that was grounded nearby Key Largo, Florida on Saturday, according to the United States Border Patrol officials.

As per the officials, when 113 individuals on board jumped from the ship, the United States Coast Guard as well as Border Patrol crews made rescues and took the migrants into custody.

According to Walter N. Slosar, head of the Miami area of the Border Patrol, two of them required treatment for dehydration after being examined for medical conditions.
He said that a total of 220 more Haitians were detained collectively after remaining on the ship.

Although the cause for their journey remained unknown, Haitians have been moving to the United States in recent years to flee poverty, the effects of natural catastrophes, and political unrest.

According to data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, or CBP, approximately 50,000 Haitian migrants were found at U.S. borders in 2021 and approximately 40,000 in 2022 through the end of June. Thousands of Haitians have been expelled or deported from the United States. However, this number decreased in June as more people were permitted to apply for asylum at legitimate ports of entry, thanks to the Biden administration.

A ship carrying around 300 Haitians has arrived in the Florida Keys at least twice since March. CBP referred to a landing on March 6 as a “smuggling event.”

He stated, “We are working to keep them safe, clean, fed and healthy and identify exactly who they are and what they may or may not have brought with them to the country.”

The Straits of Florida have been traversed by numerous migrants from Cuba and Haiti in ill-maintained boats and even on flotation devices, necessitating lifesaving rescues from the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard said on Saturday that it was still looking for five Cubans who had vanished and were thought to have been on a boat that sank Friday near Sugarloaf Key. According to the agency, eight people were saved, and two bodies were recovered from the water.
