Iran: Death of young woman in police custody leads to protest, kills four

Iran: The authorities of Iran confirmed on Tuesday that about four individuals were killed at the time of the popular unrest over the death of young women in police custody but sought to deflect blame from security forces by calling the protester killings “suspicious”.

The demonstrations continued in Tehran late on Tuesday as well as police fired gas, according to the sources.

The government of Tehran, Mohsen Mansouri, accused foreign agents of fomenting the violence in the nation’s capital.

He stated citizens of three foreign nations were apprehended during gatherings overnight, as per the information shared by sources.

Moreover, the unrest is some of Iran’s worst since the previous year’s street clashes over water shortages and reflects popular discontent over women’s rights and security and an economy reeling from international sanctions.

In an apparent effort to defuse tensions, an aide to Iran’s supreme leader paid condolences to the family of the woman killed in custody in Tehran after morality police officials detained her for “unsuitable attire”.

The Kurdish human rights group Hengaw mentioned in the statement that three people were killed in Kurdistan on Monday when security forces opened fire.

The governor of Kurdistan province confirmed that about three individuals were killed but mentioned the deaths were suspicious as well as did not say who was responsible for them.

Along with this, Esmail Zarei Koosha highlighted in the comments, noted, “A citizen of (the city of) Divandarreh was killed with a weapon that isn’t used by the armed forces. Terrorist groups are looking to kill.”

The reports of a fourth death, of a “police assistant” who sustained injuries during violent protests in the southern city of Shiraz, says the sources.

The shared videos have shown demonstrations in various locations, through social media, along with the women waving their headscarves and protesters facing off with security forces.
