Saint Lucia: HelpAWS asks people for support, shares glimpse of busy week

Castries, Saint Lucia: HelpAWS, the dog shelter of Saint Lucia, has shared a glimpse of its busy week. It noted that 71- That’s how many puppies and strays the volunteers were able to get fixed over the past few days. To say it has been a busy week would be an understatement.

“Starting off on Sunday, we were able to get 30 pups fixed. Throughout the rest of the week, we were able to get 34 female pups along with six adult females who are moms to babies currently in our care, and one adult male,” it stated.

The volunteers of the organisation are mentally as well as physically exhausted, but all are extremely proud of all of the work they were able to accomplish. Being able to host a “Spay a Stray” campaign every few months allows us to offer a free clinic to continue to help those who can’t afford to do it on their own and to help reduce and hopefully stop the overpopulation on the island. One female dog can carry up to 12 puppies at a time. It may not seem like a lot but imagine all these pups continuing to reproduce every few months, as per the update by the dog shelter.

“Every pup we are able to get fixed is a life saved, the risk of STDs is greatly reduced, and they are even able to live longer and not to mention not having to worry about unwanted pregnancies,” it outlined while sharing its experience.

“We wouldn’t be able to host this campaign outside of the annual Spay & Neuter clinic if it wasn’t for all our amazing donors. You guys continue to go above and beyond to assist us in taking care of these babies. With your help, we will continue to save these babies’ lives one day and spay at a time. This clinic also allows us to educate locals on the importance of spay and neuter,” it added.

Further, it mentioned, “Of course, we know that, unfortunately, overpopulation is an ongoing issue, and that is why we are hoping that we can continue to offer our free clinic to our Island in the years to come.”

In the end, the organisation appealed to the people to support and donate and noted, “One way you can support us and the care of our pups is through entering our Mother’s Day raffle. Donations of $25 get you three entries to the raffle, a $50 donation gets you seven entries, and $100 gets you 15 entries, + you get to name one of these special pups in our care! If you would like to help us towards the care of these adorable little pups, please consider donating via Etransfer, Paypal, or Zelle to [email protected] or via Venmo to @helpaws.”
