Trinidad and Tobago: Boy, 17, Held with AR-15, Magazine, Ammo in Sangre Grande

Yesterday, on May 14, 2023, a 17-year-old juvenile who was held with a high-powered rifle and a large quantity of ammunition by gang intelligence detectives in Sangre Grande is currently assisting police with investigations.

The boy was arrested during an anti-gang operation executed by Eastern Divisional Gang and Intelligence Unit (EDGIU) police officers following a surveillance exercise into illegal firearms and ammunition in the Sangre Grande district.

According to police, at 6.30 pm on May 13, EDGIU officers proceeded to a house located in the North Eastern Settlement, Sangre Grande, where they executed a search warrant.

During the raid, the EDGIU police officers allegedly found one black AR-15 equipped with one magazine, 21 rounds of 5.56 ammunition, 50 rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition and one drum magazine containing a quantity of nine-millimetre ammunition in the accused bedroom.

He was subsequently arrested and taken into police custody. The Eastern Division Task Force also supported the exercise.

Another arrest was made Trinidad and Tobago Police Department on May 13, 2023. During the incident, seven perpetrators were arrested, five stolen vehicles were recovered, and several types of drugs were seized in various exercises across six Divisions.

A roving roadblock and anti-crime exercise in the Central Division resulted in the arrest of a 22-year-old man for possession of a shotgun and three 12-gauge cartridges.

A 27-year-old man was also arrested during the Breach of Protection Order exercise, and ten tickets were issued for various traffic offences. The movement, which was part of Operation Real Steel, occurred in the Freeport district between 2 am and 6 am yesterday.

An 18-year-old Couva man was also arrested for Possession of Ammunition in another Couva District exercise conducted between 9 am and 11 am yesterday.

Officers of the North Eastern Division conducted an exercise between 11 am and 8 pm yesterday in the Santa Cruz and San Juan Districts. Two persons were arrested for Possession of Marijuana for Trafficking within 500 metres of a school.

Known drug blocks were also targeted during the exercise leading officers to allegedly find 474.6 grammes of marijuana while searching a bushy area at Mt. Hope Road and Shende Street, Sunshine Avenue, San Juan. No one was arrested in connection with the find. Officers also recovered a stolen vehicle during a separate exercise in the Malick area.

There were two arrests in North-Central Division related to shooting enquiries. Two stolen vehicles were recovered in the Northern Division, one stolen vehicle was recovered in the Western Division, and another in Tobago.
