West Indies qualifies for Super 8 stage of ICC T20 World Cup

West Indies: West Indies secured the spot in the Super 8 stage of the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup tournament with their 13-run win over New Zealand on Thursday. The match was held at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Trinidad and Tobago.

Guyanese batsman Sherfane Rutherford played a significant inning of 68 runs from 39 balls to push the score to a challenging 149 by 9 out after 20 overs. New Zealand got the target of 150 runs; however, they could only manage to get to 136 with 9 out in the end.

In the match of group C, West Indies have played three matches so far against Uganda, Papua New Guinea, and New Zealand. The team managed to secure victory in three of these matches and stood at the top of the standing with six points.

In the match, the toss was won by New Zealand which opted to bowl against West Indies in match 26 of T20 World Cup 2024. However, the decision has turned out in the favour of the West Indies team as their Guyanese player becomes the player of the match.

With the bowling, Antigua Alzaari Joseph took four wickets for West Indies and got only 19 runs. Further, Guyanese Gudakes Motie also took three wickets with 25 runs and these players have remained match-winner.

West Indies will now play its last group stage match against Afghanistan on June 18, 2024, and the match will be the determining factor of the Super 8 stage for the latter team. With the victory against New Zealand, the team became the 4th team to qualify for the Super 8 stage of the tournament which is the ultimate path of the semi-final round.

Besides the West Indies, India, Australia, and South Africa also made their place in the Super 8 stage of the tournament with their victories in three matches in the respective groups.

Notably, the ICC T20 World Cup has been taking place in the Caribbean and the United States as it was kickstarted on June 2, 2024 and will run through June 29, 2024. Several Caribbean countries such as Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia and Barbados have been hosting different games.

The finals of the tournament will also take place in Barbados on June 29, 2024.

Brian Lara Cricket Ground has also been lauded due to its neutral pitch as it has been for both batting and bowling.
