Bills bans mandatory overtime of Nurses, targets number of patients in Seattle

In Seattle, the hospitals are facing a shortage of health care workers. As per the Unions, since the pandemic started due to the workload, the hospital staff is leaving the health care sector. The increase in the case of the COVID-19 infection is making the situation more vulnerable.

The government union has introduced two bills in Olympia that will handle this issue.

As per the Washington State Nurses Association, the record has mentioned about collective data of the health care employees. There is 84 per cent of the workers in SEIU Healthcare 1199NW and UFCW 21 are ruined and become wholly exhausted because of overwork. The average percentage of 49% of health care workers stated they would leave this sector because of the workflow in the coming years.

The Unions are working to support the individuals from the health care sector as they are looking forward to the lawmakers. In the previous week, both the bills were presented: House Bill 1868 and Senate Bill 5751.

The bills that have the cooperation of two political parties, as well, can transform the way how hospitals treat health care employees. The bill includes how much of the patients will be handled by a single nurse, and they have to maintain the employee standards at the health care centres.

The majority of the people assigned to a particular nurse depends on the department of the medical institution. Such as to the nurses that work in the ICU-Intensive Care Unit will only handle approximately two patients. On the other hand, the Emergency Departments nurses will only manage a maximum of 3 people who are non-trauma and are not critical or includes only one -trauma and acute patient.

The bills also include that overtime has been banned as all the health care officials will work only on time as they have been provided. The statement mentioned, “The overtime is strictly voluntary.”
