In the United States, 57-year-old David Bennett had a successful pig-heart implant earlier this week, and after some questions were raised, it was revealed that, in 1988, he stabbed a man repeatedly and left the man paralysed.
It was the first-ever transplant in which the doctors involved the heart of an animal. At the University of the Maryland Medical Center, this surgery took place, and it was the most lengthy procedure of all time.
The Doctors at the University of Maryland have indicated the surgery to be a step forward for helping the people in need, as it will lead to helping more than 1,10,000 individuals, respectively. The people suffering from severe issues need organ transplants while also being administered, as the majority of the people die while waiting for the surgery.
Meanwhile, the sister of the victim, Leslie Shumaker Downer, shared the details about an incident, as in 1988, he stabbed a man at the bar in Maryland and also the man got paralysed during the attack.
​​During an interview, Ms Downer said, “In the previous year, the family has to suffer from lots of disturbing and traumatic time after this successful implant of the animal organ in the body has provided him the second chance to live, but I wish it could have gone to a deserving person.”
Mr Bennett stabbed a person named Edward Shumaker at least seven times in the bar as he saw that the man was flirting with his wife. After this incident, he was sentenced to jail for approximately for ten years. In addition, he paid an extra amount of $3.4m in a civil suit to his family, which they claimed they never got.
Edward Shumaker was in a wheelchair for a period of ten consecutive years. In 2005 has a stroke, and after two years, he died. Along with him, his family was having a hard time paying the loans for the wheelchair-accessible van.
As per the data provided by the Shumaker family, Edward Shumaker brother dropped him off at the bar on that day the incident took place. Afterwards, before he died in 1999, he got addicted to opioids and one day, by got overdosed, and he died at the age of 28.
