World’s oldest gorilla dies at 61 in Atlanta Zoo

The Atlanta Zoo workers have declared that the world’s oldest male gorilla named Ozzie died on Tuesday. He was 61-year-old. As per the information provided by the sources, he was the third most senior among all the gorillas globally as the other two were female.

According to the information shared by the Zoo officials, the reason for his death is not yet identified. Ozzie was a 350-pound western lowland gorilla.

As per the news release, it is believed that he was the only single who successfully survived for so many days as he was a member of the original generation of gorillas in which he was the sole survivor. In 1988, he came to them during the starting of the Ford African Rain Forest.

Moreover, in the previous week, it was noticed that Ozzie’s appetite was going down, and the Zoo officials were working on his diet and boosting him to eat, said the Zoo authorities.

The release mentioned, “From the previous 24 hours, the health care units were giving him the treatment because his face was swelled, he was feeling weak as well as the gorilla was not able to drink properly.”

Furthermore, an autopsy will be held to check the details about the cause of the death.

Ozzie was unwell since he lost his habitat-mate. He died after the death of Choomba, a 59-year-old, as she was euthanized because her health was not getting better. In the Zoo Atlanta, they used to live together in the same habitat area for more than 15-years.

Apart from this, the President and the CEO of the Zoo Atlanta, Raymond B. King, mentioned, “This a huge loss for the Atlanta Zoo, but it was sure that this is going to happen someday, he was a real legend and feeling very bad after losing him.”
