Pandemic alarms need of improvement in waste management, says WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) alerted the soar in the medical waste created by the ongoing pandemic, including garbage from test kits to vaccinations and face masks, which has put a massive burden on the waste management systems.

As per the new report provided by the World Health Organisation, more than tens of thousands of tons of extra waste have been developed globally, creating a devastating situation for the environment and human health.

Moreover, sudden action is required to be taken to improve waste management practices.

The statement by the WHO mentioned, “The reports provided by the various sources have highlighted more than 140 million test kits, 2,600 tonnes of plastic which is non-infectious trash, as well as 731,000 litres of chemical waste (which is equal to the one-third of an Olympic-size swimming pool), have been created a huge burden on hospital facilities.

“More than eight billion vaccine doses against the COVID-19 has been operated around the globe by producing 144,000 tonnes of the more waste, including needles, safety boxes and syringes”, World Health Organisation further added.

In March 2020, there were around 87,000 tonnes of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the beginning of the pandemic, and in November (the previous year), the majority of the PPE was included in the trash.

The Executive Director, Dr Michael Ryan of the WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme, mentioned, “It is necessary to provide the health care employees with the right of using the Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). On the other hand, it is imperative to make sure that this will be used safely and would not harm the environment and don’t care any danger to the person’s health.”

According to the World Health Organisation, there was much effort have been taken to put into procuring the supplies of the PPE, but significantly less action was taken to maintain the management of the waste.
