In New Jersey, USA, two women in an all-women’s penitentiary institution have fallen pregnant after having physical contact (Sex) with the transgender inmates.
The pregnant women who have not been identified are living accommodated at the embattled Edna Mahan Correctional Facility in Clinton, which the Governor of the state has made the decision to close in the last year.
The officials of the prison mentioned in that statement about both the cases that the sex involved consent or consensus.
Moreover, it is not clear if the women had sex with the same transgender inmate or if it was two different inmates.
In Edna Mahan, there are 27 transgender prisoners as well as more than 800 women altogether. It is also not understandable how far along the two of the inmates are as well as whether they plan to continue with their respective pregnancies. An investigation has been launched.
The correctional facility began to house transgender females, including those that have yet to undergo gender reassignment surgery in the previous year.
The legal director Jeanne LoCicero of the ACLU defended on Tuesday the policy, saying it makes sure the rights of trans prisoners were not violated.
Along with this, she mentioned during an interview, “[It’s] in line with New Jersey’s strong anti-discrimination laws that prevent discrimination and harassment on the basis of gender identity.”
In Garden State, there is the only women’s prison named Edna Mahan that does not need the transgender inmates to proceed with reassignment surgery in order to be housed at the correctional.
Furthermore, DOC’s external affairs executive director named, Dan Sperrazza, “While DOC cannot comment on any specific disciplinary or housing decisions that may be considered in light of these events, the Department always reserves all options to ensure the health and safety of the individuals in its custody.”
