Texas: Ex-rugby player killed in a car wreck

A South African 41-year-old rugby star had died in a car wreck in Texas on Friday when a teenager escaped a traffic stop and slammed into his car, said the local authorities.

As per the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the man named Pedrie Wannenburg was in the car with his wife Evette as well as their daughter Isabelle and son Francois during the time of the crash, which happened when the police officials tried to stop the 16-year-old driver outside of Houston.

Moreover, the rugby star’s 8-year-old son was transported by an aircraft to the health care centre in critical condition. His 10-year-old daughter and wife were not injured.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the driver hit three vehicles, and a fourth that couldn’t stop in time crashed in the accident. Along with this, according to the local fire service, six persons were sent to the hospital.

On Social Media, Gonzalez said, “One of our units attempted to conduct a traffic stop at Greenhouse Rd & Little York when the vehicle fled. The suspect vehicle then struck two other cars.”

Meanwhile, Wannenberg was the lone fatality in the collision, according to Gonzalez, who added that his wife and 10-year-old daughter were unharmed.

Gonzalez mentioned in the statement that his son, 8-year-old is still in a critical condition with “light-threatening injuries.”

In addition, the suspect has been identified as Ali Alabadi, a 16-year-old. He was travelling 100 miles per hour at the moment when the incident took place, as per the report shared by sources.

Furthermore, Major Quincey Whitaker of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office shared the information during an interview that the sheriff’s officer who chased Alabadi following a 5:45 p.m. traffic check is “still talking to the DA’s office” about the circumstances of the chase.

According to the sheriff’s office, the adolescent has been charged with felony murder, reckless aggravated assault causing significant bodily harm, and aggravated assault causing bodily injury.
