Texas reports first case of monkeypox: Officials

The health officials of Texas has made an announcement on Tuesday that they have recorded the 1st case of monkeypox in the state but also noted that the illness will not pose any threat to the general public.

The case was noted in a Dallas County resident who has recently travelled internationally, as per the Texas Department of State Health Services. The department is working along with Dallas County Health and Human Services and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to scrutinize the case.

Health officials further revealed that they have also noted a “few” people who may have been affected by the virus in Dallas. Those people are checking on themselves for symptoms of infection, officials said.

In May, several cases of monkeypox were recorded in the nations that don’t normally report the diseases.

According to the World Health Organization, in May, several cases of monkeypox were recorded in countries that don’t regularly report the disease. This is not typical of earlier patterns of monkeypox. The organization is working with all affected nations, including the U.S., to check upon the outbreak and provide knowledge on how to curb the spread and care for those infected.

As per WHO, the threat of this outbreak becoming widespread is low. Monkeypox is not typically believed to be very contagious because it needs close physical contact with someone who is contagious in order to spread.

As per CDC, with the Texas case recorded on Tuesday, about 35 cases have now been noted across 14 states & Washington, D.C., this year. According to data, about 1,000 cases have been recorded across 29 nations in 2022, with the most of cases in the United Kingdom, Spain, and Portugal.

In response to the latest monkeypox outbreak, the CDC issued an “Alert – Level 2” travel advisory, asking travellers to “practise enhanced precautions.” That advisory is the middle point between the lowest level (“practice usual precautions”) and the highest level (“avoid nonessential travel”).
