Hurricane Ian kills four in North Carolina

United States: Most people have died in North Carolina as a result of Hurricane Ian, including two in automobile accidents, one who drowned, and two more who were poisoned by carbon monoxide, according to Governor Roy Cooper on Saturday. 

Cooper issued a statement saying, “We mourn with the families of those who have passed away and ask everyone to be cautious when cleaning up to avoid future fatalities or injuries.”

Along with this, Cooper’s office reports that the following people have died in storm-related events since Friday morning:

A 25-year-old male who hydroplaned into another car on Raleigh Road in Johnston County “under stormy circumstances.”

A 24-year-old woman who veered off a slick road on Friday afternoon and struck a tree in Clayton.

A 22-year-old man perished in Martin County on Friday night when his pickup off the road and sank into a flooded marsh.

A 65-year-old man passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning in Johnston County as a result of a generator that was operating in his locked garage while the electricity was off at home. His wife was in the hospital.

Governor Cooper mentioned in the statement, “During power outages, generators should always be used out of doors and away from the home to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. For the same reasons, gas or charcoal grills should never be used indoors, and cars should not be left running in a closed garage.”

In addition, Cooper stated that “many hazards remain” across the state, including downed trees, power lines, and power outages.

About 210,000 people, he claimed, were without energy as of 1 p.m. on Saturday. Just after 11 p.m., there were around 418,000 outages.

According to the governor’s office, on Friday. 12,000 Duke Energy customers in Charlotte were without power early on Saturday due to Ian’s high winds and heavy rain, according to company officials.
