Massachusetts: Mother, child healing after suffering near-death experience while foraging for death cap mushrooms

United States: A mother and her child heal after suffering a near-death experience while foraging for death cap mushrooms for dinner in Massachusetts.

An Amherst, Massachusetts, woman named Kam Look, 63, and her son Kai Chen, 27, were reportedly outside gathering mushrooms for cooking that matched the ones they had in Malaysia.

When medical officials at the hospital realised the two would require a significant amount of care, they were transferred to Worcester’s UMass Memorial Medical Center.

The woman and her son suffered significant, perhaps fatal, liver damage as a result of the event, according to Boston 25 News.

Upon concluding that mushrooms were the source of the illness, a toxicology specialist reportedly immediately ordered an experimental new medicine from Philadelphia. Then, after communicating with national toxicology specialists, UMass staff provided advice on how to rescue the mother and son.

Chen was released from the hospital a few days after showing sufficient improvement, but Look needed a “more severe intervention” and was sent to the waiting list for a liver transplant. An “important” operation was completed.

Death cap mushrooms resemble common toxic and inedible mushrooms non most respects. They seem greenish and have white gills on the underside.

According to medical experts, there was a 30 percent and 50 percent chance that the mother and boy, in this case, would die from liver disease, respectively.
