Know some unique facts of Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls, composed of the Horseshoe falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls, runs between the state of New York in the United States of America as well as the province of Ontario in Canada. It is a group of three waterfalls that are located on the Niagara River. 

The Horseshoe Falls are located mostly on the Canadian side of the border, while the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls are located entirely on the American side, separated by Goat Island and Luna Island, respectively.

These falls were formed by glacial activity about 10,000 years ago, and the international border between the US and Canada runs through the Horseshoe Falls. Along with this, in cold weather, the falls can freeze over, creating ice formations along the banks of the river and falls. 

This happened in 1811, 912, when Niagara Falls saw record low temperatures and the longest stretch of below-zero weather in a single winter, causing the falls to freeze so densely that people were able to cross on ice bridges.

Other times Niagara falls have frozen:

1848: Niagara Falls froze over, causing the river to become completely blocked with ice.

1911: The falls froze completely, attracting many visitors and becoming a popular tourist attraction.

1912: The froze again, this time for an extended period of time due to record low temperatures and the longest stretch of below-zero weather in a single winter.

1917: The falls froze over again, with ice covering the river as far downstream as Fort Erie, Ontario.

2014: Niagara Falls froze over due to a polar vortex, which brought extremely cold temperatures to the region.

2015: The falls froze over again due to another polar vortex.
