St Kitts and Nevis: Dr Mark Fleming successfully matching at Boston Children’s Hospital for pediatric surgery fellowship

In 2021 Dr Mark Fleming, aka @fleming_ii, was named a recipient of the @uvahealthnews 2021 Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. Award for his tireless work promoting diversity within the University of Virginia surgical community and beyond.

Mark Fleming II, MD, is a general surgery resident physician. To become an MD, medical school graduates spend anywhere from three to seven years in a residency program.

He cares for patients with a wide range of conditions, such as hernias, gallbladder infections, soft tissue masses or abscesses, and breast and gastrointestinal cancers. He loves his patients and prides himself on advocating for them.

“Hearing patients tell me ‘I feel so much better’ after surgery is one of the best rewarding moments this career can offer,” Mark says.

His goal is to be a gifted surgeon and a great physician so he can contribute to the growth and innovations within the surgical field to help more people.

Growing up, Mark knew he wanted to be a doctor. Surgery swept him off his feet during his 3rd year of medical school, and he joined the surgery team in the summer of 2017.

Mark is from St Kitts, West Indies, in the Caribbean. He moved to Georgia in 2008 to complete his senior year of high school and then went to college. Later, he went to UConn’s School of Medicine to start his medical career.

Mark loves the beach and all things outdoors that involve warmth and sunshine. Family is important to him, and he puts their needs before his. He and his partner love to travel and explore different cultures and cuisines.

In his spare time, Mark plays basketball and cooks food that reminds him of home. His goal in life is to open a pediatric surgical centre in St Kitts to address the surgical needs of kids on the island.
