Kalinago, Dominica: Twenty-eight young people who participated in the Kalinago 120 Youth Disaster Managers Summer Camp programme, which was hosted in the Kalinago Territory, earned certificates of completion on August 25, 2023.
Residents of Bataca, Atkinson/Antrizel Sineku, Mahaut River, Gaulette River, St. Cyr, Salybia, and Touna Concord were among the participants.
The programme, which was organised by staff from the Division of Kalinago Affairs within the Ministry of Environment, Rural Modernization, Kalinago Upliftment, and Constituency Empowerment, took place from August 21–25, 2023, at the Salybia Primary School.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID/BHA), represented by Mr. Cecil Shillingford, a disaster risk management specialist, provided funding for the programme.
The goal of the “Kalinago 120 Youth Disaster Managers Summer Day Camp” is to teach young people about disaster management from risks to which they may be particularly susceptible, as well as to teach them fundamental emergency skills such as an introduction to first aid, fire safety, CPR, and disaster preparedness best practises, with the necessary skill sets.
Participants can aid people in their homes, neighbourhoods, or schools after an incident by using the skills they have learned in the classroom and during exercises when professional responders are not immediately available to help.
The Kalinago Upliftment and Rural Modernization Ministry’s permanent secretary was present at the ending ceremony.
Empowerment of Constituents By acting as “disaster management champions” in their particular Schools, participants are urged to use this experience to support and assist in promoting school emergency management activities.
The Kalinago Youth Disaster Managers Summer Day Camp students acquired theoretical knowledge and practical training in a fun and dynamic setting.
