Antigua Airport closed due to Hurricane Tammy

The Antigua airport was closed yesterday at 5:30 PM due to approaching Hurricane Tammy. All flights scheduled for October 21, 2023, are cancelled due to weather disturbance.

As per the statistics released by Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services, the rescheduling of cancelled flights will be announced soon.

The following flights are now cancelled due to Hurricane Tammy-
JY707 Dominica – Barbados
JY795 Antigua – Barbados
JY796 Barbados – Antigua
JY797 Antigua – Barbados
JY631 Tortola – Antigua
JY632 Antigua – Tortola
JY633 Tortola – Antigua
JY634 Antigua – Tortola

Antigua and Barbuda are on high alert as Hurricane Tammy inches closer to the Leeward Islands. The latest National Hurricane Center (NHC) advisory reveals that Hurricane Tammy maintains its course towards the Leeward Islands.

It is now located at latitude 14.5 North and longitude 59.7 West, placing it 197 miles away from the sister island nation.

In the latest advisory issued recently, Tammy’s maximum sustained winds have increased to 80 mph, up from 75 mph in the previous update. Additionally, its forward speed has quickened to 9 mph, compared to 7 mph in the previous report.

Based on the latest data, all Hurricane and storm conditions are anticipated to be over by Sunday morning in Antigua. It can also last till Monday, depending on the forward speed of Tammy.

The Hurrican warning is still in effect for Guadeloupe, Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla, St. Maarten, St. Martin and St. Barthelemy.

The Hurricane Watch tropical storm watch is in effect for Dominica, Saba St. Eustatius and Martinique.

Hurricane Tammy, the 7th hurricane of the season, in what has been the most active El Niño ever. Tammy, the 20th named storm of the season, ties this year for the 4th most storms in recorded history.
