Guyana’s sprinting sensations gear up for Inter-Guiana games showdown

Georgetown, Guyana: As the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) kick off in Suriname from November 17-19, all eyes are on the formidable Guyanese athletic trio—Tianna Springer, Ezekiel Newton, and Javon Roberts—who are set to make waves in the junior competitions.

Tianna Springer, a seasoned sprinter with an impressive track record, is undoubtedly the favourite to clinch the 400m gold at the IGG.

Boasting previous victories at the CARIFTA Games, South American U-20 Championships, and the Commonwealth Youth Games, Springer is poised to continue her winning streak.

The 200m event, however, promises an exciting battle between Springer and her teammate Athaleyha Hinckson, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown.

Ezekiel Newton, another sprinting sensation from Guyana, secured gold in the 200m at the South American U-20 Championships. With his sights set on the sprint double, Newton is ready to showcase his speed and agility on the IGG stage.

Meanwhile, middle-distance runner Javon Roberts, who clinched the 800m gold at CARIFTA, is the sure favourite to dominate both the 800m and 1500m events, adding to Guyana’s medal tally.

Guyana’s overall athletic team strength is expected to shine, mirroring their success in 2022. The team is well-prepared and poised to secure the majority of medals in the track and field events, establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the region.

Beyond athletics, the IGG will feature competitions in various disciplines, including chess, futsal, football, lawn tennis, swimming, basketball, and volleyball. Notably, table tennis and badminton were removed from the initial list of sports at the host’s request, streamlining the focus on the remaining eight disciplines.

The anticipation for the games has been building, with participating delegations set to arrive on November 16 and depart on November 20.

The delay in the event, initially scheduled for October 26–31, was attributed to fiscal resource challenges faced by the Surinamese administration.

Despite this setback, the IGG, first held in 1967 and traditionally an annual event, was successfully revived last year after a five-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to the efforts of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government.

As the athletes from Guyana gear up to compete in the IGG, the stage is set for a display of talent, determination, and sportsmanship.

Fans eagerly await the outcome as these young athletes aim to fetch their names in the history books of this historic event.
