Colorado: Criminals steal money on pretext of borrowing mobile phones

In Colorado, it has been reported that criminals try to steal money by borrowing mobile phones from strangers. This concern is gradually increasing among all of the individuals.

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office reports the current trend that came into effect at the CSU-Pueblo, where various of the students said that the money in their accounts had been transferred from their Venmo accounts after loaning their cell phone to someone.

Moreover, as per the information provided by the sheriff’s office, the scammer usually asks for a phone call as they are desperate to make an “emergency” phone call. Around one suspect has been discovered by the authorities in Pueblo. The investigation on this case is going on.

Along with this, Pueblo County Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Bureau Chief David Lucero mentioned, “Money can be transferred so quickly through these apps that by the time the victim realizes it, the suspect is long gone. We’re not telling people not to help others, but we are asking them to be aware and protect their phones and the information they have on them. Even if you don’t have cash or banking apps, there may be personal information on it that someone may want.”

Furthermore, the sheriff’s office shared some of the guidelines, and they stated you can still help people who may need to use your phone to make a call but make sure to protect yourself from being a crime victim.

• Make the phone call for the individual and use the speaker

• Make sure banking as well as cash apps are secure and password protected

• Make sure to log out of your accounts after using them.

• Stay alert and be cautious to keep your money and information safe.
