US: State Department announces to reopen Ukrainian embassy in Kyiv

The U.S. State Department has recently planned to reopen its embassy in the Ukrainian city of Kyiv. The following announcement was made during late hours on Wednesday after halting its functions for over three months amid the Russia-Ukraine war crisis.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken has issued a statement that, “The Ukrainian people, with our security help, have defended their homeland in the face of Russia’s unconscionable invasion, and, the result of which, the Stars and Stripes are flying over the embassy once again. We stand firm with, and continue to help, the government and people of Ukraine as they defend their nation from Russia’s brutal war of aggression.”

The State Department has halted the embassy functions in Kyiv on February 14, just ten days before Russian troops poured over the border in a long-anticipated effort to oust the Ukraine government and install one more in line with Moscow.

Whereas, U.S. diplomats continued to offer services from the far-west city of Lviv, at times staying overnight in neighbouring Poland due to security concerns.

The return to Kyiv came weeks following Ukraine forces soundly defeated Russian efforts to seize control of northern Ukraine and the capital, and the war became centred in the east and south of the country.

“As we take this momentous step, we have put forward additional measures to increase the safety of our colleagues who are returning to Kyiv and have enhanced our security measures and protocols,” said Blinken.
