US: Second man charged with murder in killing of Wake County deputy

United States: A second man is now accused of murder in the killing of Wake County Ned Byrd this current month.

The 25-year-old, Alder Alfonso Marine Sotelo, was indicted on Tuesday on a murder charge in the death of Byrd. The 48-year-old deputy was discovered dead from multiple gunshot wounds on August 12 on a rural road in southeastern Wake County.

The older brother of Alder Alfonso Marin Sotelo, Arturo Marin Sotelo29-year-old was charged by the Wake County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday with killing Byrd and was also indicated on the murder charge by the grand jury on Tuesday.

Along with this, if convicted of murder, the brothers would face a life sentence in prison or the death penalty. District Attorney Lorrin Freeman has mentioned in the statement she will decide whether to look for the death penalty in about 90 days.

Byrd was a K-9 officer and 13-year veteran of the department of sheriff that was found outside his unmarked Sheriff’s Office SUV at about 1 a.m. Friday, August 12, nearby a gas station on Auburn Knightdale and Battle Bridge roads. He was wearing a protective vest, and his canine partner, Sasha, was still in the SUV.

The representative of the Sheriff’s Office, Eric Curry, mentioned in the statement Byrd had responded to a domestic incident in that area around 11 p.m. Thursday, August 11.

After the deputies replied to the call, they typically pull off to a safe location and enter their note from the incident, which Byrd performed, according to Curry.

At some point, the dispatch tried to check in with Byrd, but he did not reply, says Curry. The Deputies tracked his vehicle, and another deputy sent to the location found Byrd’s body.
