Amid tensions with China, US announces $1.1 billion in military aid for Taiwan

United States: The authorities of the United States of America on Friday announced a new $1.1 billion pack of arms to Taiwan in a new bid to boost the island’s defences amid soaring tension with Beijing.

The previous US deal was made a month after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a bold visit to the sovereign democracy, which prompted mainland China to unleash a military display that may have been a future invasion.

Along with this, the package includes $665 million for an early reader warning system to help Taiwan in tracking incoming
missiles and $355 for up to 60 advanced Harpoon missiles capable of sinking incoming ships.

A representative for the State Department, which approved the sale, highlighted the package was “essential for Taiwan’s security.”

According to the State Department, only Beijing, which claims ownership of the island, is still recognised by the United States of America.

Furthermore, according to the spokeswoman, “These proposed sales are normal situations to support Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its military forces and to retain a credible defence capacity.”

He said that in line with Taiwan’s people’s aspirations and best interests, “The United States would continue to promote a peaceful resolution of cross-Strait disputes.”

Additionally, the sale needs to be approved by the US Congress.

The deal requires US Congress approval, which is essentially certain due to Taiwan’s strong backing across party lines.
