US-Canada to contribute to ‘Joint Programme for Haitian National Police’

United States: The United States of America is contributing to the “Joint Programme for the Haitian National Police,” a multi-donor basket fund on security in Haiti, which the United Nations Development Program manages (UNDP) in coordination with the Haitian National Police (HNP), UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), as well as other stakeholders.

Canada introduced the fund with a donation of 10 million Canadian dollars, and today, the United States announced a donation of $3 million U.S. dollars to complement ongoing U.S. security assistance activities.

We also would like to commend the commitments made today by Japan and European Union, and Mexico. We hope today’s event will generate additional donations from international partners in the near future.

Moreover, the security basket fund aims to raise the HMP’s capacity to improve security, conduct law enforcement activities, as well as address some of the persistent institutional weaknesses within the HNP.

Through the fund, the UN, as well as partner nations, will assist the HNP in improving its administration/logistics, training police, and strengthening operational capacity to counter gang violence in Haiti.

Canada, as well as the United States of America, commented on the international community for mobilizing over $294 million in new commitments from the month of December 2021 to support Haiti’s most pressing needs.

In these very challenging times for the Haitian people, we are convinced that international partners should redouble our efforts to support the authorities of Haiti to ensure the people’s security and protection and improve conditions on the ground.
