These residents, which are part of our vibrant Caribbean community, share their heritage with their fellow Philadelphians and over generations have positively impacted our overall population, culture, political landscape, religious diversity, economy, and arts scene. As the birthplace of the American Revolution, our city is proud to be an international symbol of freedom and rejection of tyranny, colonialism, or other forms of oppression from another country.
The United States of America established diplomatic relations with Antigua and Barbuda in 1981 following its independence from the United Kingdom. The United States of America supports the authority of Antigua and Barbuda’s efforts to encourage the country’s economic development, protect public health, and improve its citizens’ security and standard of living.
On Tuesday, November 1, 2022, during a weeklong schedule of events, the City of Philadelphia proudly hosts a ceremonial flag-raising ceremony to honor the local Antigua and Barbuda community and celebrate the countries 41st anniversary of independence from the United Kingdom.
