Read Here: Some facts about Tom Salo’s Hawkwatch

Tom Salo’s Hawkwatch: While these persistent south winds aren’t helpful, it’s been a pleasant and beautiful fall. Apparently it’s “an ill wind that blows nobody any good.” The hikers in their T-shirts are benefiting.

This message is mostly about what to expect over the next several weeks. I don’t have any great news on the weather. Some cooling and light NW winds are possible Thursday. They may be too light to concentrate large numbers on the ridge but I expect birds to be moving.

The Red-tailed Hawk peak most often occurs during the last week of October, and occasionally in early November. These birds should be moving most dry days, especially on favorable or light winds.

Golden Eagles arrived early this year at some of the regular northeast sites. Franklin Mountain, Hawkwatch Mountain, Waggoner’s Gap and Allegheny Front all had goldens in September and the first half of October. The golden flight typically peaks in November. (The massive early flight in 2018 was an exception). Perhaps the early movement so far this season portends something.

I’ll be watching the weather, hoping for a stiff NW wind with intermittent lake-effect snow squalls – a perfect Golden Eagle day at Franklin Mountain. Don’t forget, it will be cold. Dress appropriately and bring more layers than you anticipate.

Other news:

The Hawk Migration Association of North America recently announced an updated RPI website. Franklin Mountain data is part of these analyses. This blurb below came with the announcement. It’s interesting stuff.

South America is heading into spring now (seasons opposite of N America/Europe)
Not only is the weather warming up nicely here, but vibrant flowers are springing up everywhere in parks, trees, bushes, planted gardens even on fences and gates.

These are not the greatest flower photos I’ve ever taken ah-hem but at least you can see some of the colorful flowers I’m enjoying here every day.
