Essequibo Businessman Arrested for Domestic Violence and Illegal Firearm Possession

In a distressing turn of events, an Essequibo businessman finds himself in police custody after a report of domestic violence and threats led authorities to his doorstep on Tuesday evening.

Pooran Manman, known as Rocky, aged 44 and residing in Abram Zuil, Essequibo Coast, was apprehended by law enforcement after they allegedly discovered him in possession of an unlicensed firearm and a cache of ammunition.

The incident unfolded at approximately 20:30hrs when police officers on the Essequibo Coast received information regarding threats and acts of domestic violence against Manman’s 37-year-old wife within the confines of their residence. Responding promptly to the distress call, law enforcement officials visited the house to address the reported concerns.

Upon arriving at the scene, the police officers informed Manman about the nature of the report lodged against him. In the course of their investigation, a search was conducted in Manman’s bedroom, revealing a startling arsenal. Inside a drawer, authorities uncovered one 9mm pistol, one 7.65mm pistol, 269 rounds of .32 ammunition, twenty-one 12-gauge cartridges, nine 16-gauge cartridges, twenty-four .32 spent shells, and two .32 magazines.

The gravity of the situation escalated when police questioned Manman about the legality of the firearms in his possession. According to Police Headquarters, Manman admitted to holding a license for the 7.65mm pistol but confessed to lacking the necessary authorization for the 9mm pistol. He asserted that he had acquired the latter from an individual in Dartmouth who is now deceased.

Subsequently, the authorities took swift action, placing the businessman under arrest and transporting him to the Anna Regina police station. The charges against Manman include possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition without legal authorization.

Police spokespersons emphasized that the unlicensed 9mm firearm, along with the substantial ammunition cache, has been seized as part of the ongoing investigation. The incident underscores the multifaceted challenges law enforcement faces when responding to reports of domestic violence, with the added complication of illegal weapons exacerbating the severity of the case.

The arrest of Pooran Manman serves as a stark reminder of the collaborative efforts required to combat domestic violence and the illicit arms trade. The investigation will undoubtedly delve into the origins of the unlicensed firearm and the circumstances surrounding its acquisition, shedding light on the broader issue of illegal firearms circulating within communities.

As the legal proceedings unfold, local residents and advocates against domestic violence await further details on the case, hoping for justice and heightened awareness on the interconnected challenges posed by domestic abuse and the possession of illegal weapons in our communities.
