WHO issues warning against four cough, cold syrups following 66 deaths in Gambia

World: The World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a warning over four coughs and cold syrups (medical products) made by Maiden Pharmaceuticals in India as they have been linked to acute kidney injuries as well as deaths of about 66 children in The Gambia, a west African nation.

As per the reports, the global health body mentioned in the statement that it is conducting further investigation with the company as well as regulatory authorities in India.

The World Health Organisation mentioned in the statement, “Laboratory analysis of samples of each of the four products confirms that they contain unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol as contaminants.”

Along with this, the director general of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed while addressing a press conference that the contaminated products have so far only been detected in the Gambia, and they may be distributed to other nations.

As per the reports, the New Delhi-based company declined to comment on the matter.

In the previous month, the government of Gambia had mentioned that it had also been investigating the deaths after there was an increase in the cases of acute kidney injury among young ones under the age of five in late July.
