St. Michael School performs well in Barbados Secondary School Athletic Championships

Barbados: The St. Michael School (SMS) athletes were outstanding in the Frank Blackman zone of the Barbados Secondary School Athletic Championships when it came off last week at the Usain Bolt Complex. 

For the fourth time, the school captured both divisions having done so in 2017, 2018, 2020 and this year. There was no zonal meet in 2021 and 2022.

SMS topped the zone with 544 points in the girls’ division, way ahead of second place Queen’s College who mustered 294 and Coleridge & Parry who were third with 246 points. They were followed by Princess Margaret with 236, Lester Vaughan 207, Daryll Jordan 77, Ursuline Convent 50, Ellerslie 25 and St. Winifred’s 10 points.

In the boys’ division, The St. Michael School ended the zone meet with 370 points with Queen’s College not too far behind with 336 points and Coleridge & Parry were again in third place with 323 points. Lester Vaughan School was fourth with 268 followed by Daryll Jordan 208.5, Princess Margaret 160, Ellerslie School 85, Ursuline Convent School 38.5, St. Winifred’s 35 and Lockerbie College 2 points.

Athletes from various schools put in some impressive performances and would be the ones to watch when the finals play off later this week.

Sarama James of SMS running in her first BSSAC meet won the girls’ under-13 200m in 27.55 seconds well ahead of CP’s Alanna Bradshaw 28.92 seconds. James also sormed to the finish line in the 100m in 13.33 seconds.

Alexus Mascoll of Lester Vaughn was way ahead of her competitors in the girls’ under-15 100m as she raced to the finishing line in 12.72 seconds. Mascoll repeated this performance in the girls’ 200m with a time of 25.89 seconds.

Nya Browne from QC completed the sprint double by winning the 100m in 12.60 secs and the 200m in 24.81 secs. Browne also won the under-20 girls’ 100m hurdles in 14.36 secs.

Lashay Wilkinson of Princess Margaret was a clear winner in the junior girls 1500m in 36.40 minutes and Danya Skeete of QC won the girls’ under-17 800m race in 2.30.69 minutes, a time that was faster than Jade Williams’ victory in 2:42.76 minutes in the same event in the under-20 division.

Williams of SMS, completed a double of her own in the distance races when she won the under-20 girls’ 800m and the 1500m races. Princess Margaret’s Ariel Archer won the Under-17 girls’ 200m in25.26 secs and she also did a double when she won the 400m in 1:01.11 secs.

In the boys’ section, Josiah Parris of SMS was the winner in the boys’ under-20 200m in 21.75 secs and the 400m in 49.60 secs while school mate Jadon Pearce had a narrow victory in the under-20 boys 100m and he also claimed a double victory when he won the 110m hurdles in a time of 15.09 secs.

Tristan Gill from Daryll Jordan Secondary was among the double winners after he ran to victory in the 800m and the 1500m in his age group.

Kaden Dowrich-Roach of CP captured the under-17 boys’ 200m in 22.39 secs and the 400m in 51.01 secs while his teammate Kamari Johnson won the 800m in 2:05.29 minutes and the 1500m in 4:38.36 minutes.

In the Under-15 boys’ Josiah Gill from QC claimed victory in the 100m in 11:89 secs and the 200m in 24.47 secs. Shihab Juman of St. Winifred’s School won the under-15 boys’ high jump with a final height of 1.60 metres and he claimed victory in the junior boys 1500m in 5:00.63 minutes.

QC’s Danari Griffith shone in the Under-13 boys’ division, winning the 100m in 12.97 secs and the 400m in 63.61 secs. He was also second in the 200m in 26.70 secs.
