St Kitts to send African migrants back to Antigua

Within days, the survivors of the incident involving the African migrant boat carrying two citizens of Antigua are expected to arrive in Antigua from St Kitts as soon as possible.

On March 29, a vessel named Jenna B that was carrying about 30 people capsized close to the coast of St. Kitts.

According to St Kitt’s police, no charges have been brought against anyone accused of planning the disastrous cruise. Yesterday, the observer travelled to Urlings but was still determining whether nearby fishermen or locals had spotted any Africans or the boat.

As it was rumoured that 16 deaths occurred during the tragedy, just three bodies have been found. Another thirteen persons are still missing and feared dead.

When the fishing boat La Belle Michelle sank on March 28 while travelling from Antigua to the US Virgin Islands, it had about 30 Cameroonian migrants and two citizens of Antigua on board.

According to sources, one of the Antiguans the St. Kitts police questioned has now been released to his mother, a Kittitian who lives on the neighbouring island.

Police said that the three bodies are presently undergoing autopsies. Officials are looking into the event in Antigua and Barbuda as well as Guadeloupe, where La Belle Michelle was registered.

Inspector Frankie Thomas, a police spokesman for Antigua and Barbuda, told the observer that the incident was under investigation by several organisations.

The government’s denial that it was to blame for last Tuesday’s boat disaster that killed three African immigrants and left another 13 people missing was maintained by Prime Minister Gaston Browne.
