St. Maarten: Man’s lower leg amputated by propeller blade after unintentionally slipped between pier & vehicle

A man’s lower leg was amputated in a watercraft accident, ruining the excitement of the UberSoca Cruise’s sailing excursion to St. Maarten.

According to police out of St Maarten, the incident involved a customer getting off or getting on a water taxi when he unintentionally slipped between the pier and the vehicle, seriously causing the propeller blade to injure his leg.

On social media, pictures and videos of the incident showed the man’s lower right leg being severed. The injured man is seen being helped off the pier by others as they first wrap and then tie his leg to stem the bleeding.

According to Josepha, the passenger was treated at the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) and is said to be still alive.

From April 9 to April 14, 2023, the first UberSoca Cruise departed from Puerto Rico and made stops in the US Virgin Islands (USVI), St. Maarten, and St. Lucia.

According to police spokesperson Ethelwoldus Josepha, the incident involved a passenger getting off or getting on a water taxi when he unintentionally slipped between the pier and the vehicle, severely injuring his leg with the propeller blade.

He was warned not to jump on the boat because the boat was docking, but the young man, who is in his twenties, did not listen and jumped into the water, held on to the ship while the boat was on and the propeller seriously injured his leg taking off a lot of it.

Three ambulances were on the scene with police because the bystanders got aggressive toward the EMS. Alcohol is the factor in this accident and his negligence.
