Sint Maarten: Fire department suggests residents be prepared for annual Caribbean Heat Season

GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten: The Fire Department of Sint Maarten urges the community to be particularly cautious during the annual Caribbean Heat Season, which takes place from May to October, as this is a critical time, and extra vigilance is required.

The Meteorological Department of Sint Maarten (MDS) reports that the Caribbean is expected to experience more heat waves in August and September.

As the region is heading into the hot season, the Fire Department and Office of Disaster Management (ODM) have provided helpful tips to help the community stay safe.

These include minimizing sun and hot weather risks, preparing your household, pets, and workplace, avoiding strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day, and adjusting attire and activities for those working outdoors to limit sun exposure, heat, and exertion.

The fire department remarked that it is essential to be aware of the dangers of hot cars/trucks and to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Avoid leaving children in cars/trucks and watch out for symptoms such as high body temperature, vomiting, and pale and clammy skin. Stay cool by seeking air-conditioned environments or going to a pool, and avoid going out during the hottest hours.

Wear sunscreen and lightweight, light-coloured clothes if necessary, and consider carrying a hat or umbrella. It’s also important to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water. Take care of others by watching those at risk, including the sick, older adults, pregnant women, and children.

Ensuring the safety and well-being of pets during hot weather is crucial. It is imperative to never leave pets inside a car or truck and steer clear of hot surfaces like asphalt that may harm your pet’s paws.

Providing comprehensive access to water and shade is vital, as is relocating indoor pets like fish and birds away from direct sunlight or windows. Monitoring pets for signs of heat stress, including excessive panting, drooling, weakness, and reluctance to move, is essential.
