Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago: The Trinidad Police Department informed through its social media account that an 18-year-old male appeared before a Siparia Magistrate Court yesterday charged with Robbery with Violence, Possession of a Firearm and Possession of Ammunition.
Jobe George of Turpin Trace, Harris Village, South Oropouche, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 years of hard labour for three counts of Robbery with Violence, and three years of hard labour for illegally owning a firearm and keeping a sophisticated amount of ammunition with it.
As reported by the Police, on the night of June 30, 2023, a family was living in their residence in South Oropouche when a vehicle pulled inside. The perpetrators left their car and attempted a robbery. They apparently proceeded inside the house and assaulted residents living inside the house. They robbed $65,000 and jewellery at gunpoint.
The officers on mobile patrol were alerted to a robbery at South Oropouche and took immediate action. They arrived at the residence and allegedly observed a man with a gun aimed at four persons lying in a grassy yard.
The officers announced themselves and entered the premises when three of the four men escaped into some nearby bushes, and a fourth man ran to the left side of the house; Police Constables Noel and Bisram gave chase, and the man was subdued and arrested.
George was also relieved of a sawed-off shotgun loaded with two 16 gauge cartridges that were in his possession. The robbers were detained, and the officers were conducting further investigations in this case.
Illegal arms and gun violence has remained the primary concern for the police department of Trinidad and Tobago. Three suspects arrested for conducting a robbery in South Oropouche are under investigation and will face trial in the upcoming days.
