Trinidad and Tobago: Former SRP Charged with Trafficking $1M of Marijuana

Port of Spain, T&T: In a recent drug and crime suppression exercise conducted by the Matura Police Station (MPS), a 33-year-old former Special Reserve Police Officer, Elliot Alexander, found himself on the wrong side of the law.

Alexander, a resident of Oropouche Road in Sangre Grande, was apprehended on the night of November 15th with a staggering 7.5 kilograms of marijuana, valued at an estimated $1,000,000 on the street market.

The arrest resulted from a meticulous operation led by MPS police officers under the supervision of Sgt Hazel and Cpl Hanooman.

At 9 pm on the aforementioned night, officers stopped and searched a silver Nissan B-14, where they made a startling discovery. Hidden within the vehicle were 15 rectangular packets resembling the dangerous drug cannabis. Alexander, the driver of the vehicle, was promptly taken into custody.

Subsequent investigations, supported by the Eastern Division Gang and Intelligence Unit and the Special Investigations Unit, revealed the narcotics to weigh 7.5 kilograms.

The estimated street value of $1,000,000 underscored the gravity of the situation. Alexander now faces charges of Possession of Cannabis for the Purpose of Trafficking and is expected to appear virtually before a Sangre Grande Magistrate.

The operation did not conclude with Alexander’s arrest, as it also led to the recovery of a stolen vehicle. A blue Nissan Almera, reportedly taken from its owner on June 6th, 2023, in the Las Lomas district, was intercepted during the same exercise.

At 8:55 pm, MPS police officers stopped the vehicle on Salybia Bay Road, Salybia, driven by a 27-year-old PH taxi driver from Tunapuna, who allegedly failed to wear a seatbelt.

While issuing a Fixed Penalty Notice, WPC Treavajo noticed inconsistencies in the information, prompting further investigation.

The driver was detained, and upon consulting the Stolen Vehicle Squad, it was revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen earlier in the year from the Las Lomas district.

The case has since been transferred to the Las Lomas Police Post for ongoing inquiries.

The simultaneous events highlight the efficiency of the MPS in addressing both drug-related crimes and vehicle theft. The collaboration between different police units underscores the importance of coordinated efforts in maintaining public safety.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the community will be closely watching the outcome of this significant arrest and the recovery of the stolen vehicle.
