California governor tests positive against COVID-19, day after meeting New Zealand PM

The Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, was tested positive against COVID-19 infection on Sunday, a day after his high-profile meeting with the visiting Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern.

As per his official statement, Newsom has mild symptoms, and he will be isolated until he will be tested negative. The Democratic Governor has made the decision to work remotely till June 2, Thursday.

His office mentioned in the statement that the 54-year-old would start a five-day regimen of the Paxlovid antiviral treatment, which will help cure the virus.

The advocates for Paxlovid believe that the drug is 90 percent effective in fighting severe diseases.

Moreover, the office of the Governor mentioned that it had been notified by the delegation of New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Both the leaders gathered in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on Friday to make the announcement of a climate change partnership. Ardern tested positive for the infection earlier in the month of May.

Along with this, the Governor’s office highlighted that it had not yet identified how Newsom had contracted the virus. However, he had been vaccinated and received his second booster on May 18.

The availability of the virus has been widespread all over the globe, and Newsom has always strongly supported inoculation against the infection.

In addition, the Governor shared a Tweet in which he highlighted, “grateful to be vaccinated and for treatments like Paxlovid.’ He concluded by saying: ‘Wishing everyone a safe and healthy Memorial Day weekend.”

The Governor stated that he is sticking to California’s SMARTER plan, the long-term COVID-19 response strategy of states, in self-isolating. Newsome unveiled the plan in the month of February 2022.

Furthermore, SMARTER stands for Shots, Masks, Awareness, Readiness, Testing, Education, and Rx.

The Governor’s official Twitter account tweeted about his agreement with Arderm on May 27, “‘Later is too late to address climate change. This partnership with New Zealand, another global climate leader, will strengthen ties between our two governments to deploy critical solutions that are essential to addressing this existential crisis.”
