How hazardous could aluminum foil be to human health?

Aluminium is a big part of the human diet. We consume foods that are rich in Aluminium content on a daily basis. Even the doctors advise their patients to keep their bodies Aluminium rich for Healthy living. The deficiency of Aluminium can lead to various problems on both metabolic and physical levels. But, this article is not about the Aluminium that we consume in a natural form.

In this piece, we would be talking about that a product that is made with aluminium and is being used religiously in Indian households. Yes, you guessed it right. We are talking about Aluminium foil – A large slab of aluminium made by rolling it until that is less than 0.2 mm thick. While most people are more than refer to aluminum foil as tin foil, in reality, they are two completely different materials. Although, the story of aluminum foil is certainly incomplete without briefly discussing the history of tin foil. Tin foil’s history goes back longer than aluminum foil’s.

Tin is a soft metal just as aluminum is. The use of tin and tin foil in various capacities counts back to 18th century. Another application of tin foil was its use in dental operation. It was used as filling material till 1783, and there’s historical evidence from a book by H. Ambler from 1897. The flexible nature of tin foil permitted it to be reshaped to take the space between the cavity and act as the perfect filling material during this era. Fun fact: If your scissors are mould correctly you can raise their performance by spreading them, closing them, and then opening them under full force. This has the same effect as cutting foil. So try it next time instead of wasting foil, and if your scissors aren’t mould correctly then they’re going to perform badly rrespective of how sharp they are so you really need to look to that.

Whenever people ask me to sharpen ‘dull’ scissors the culprit is in fact a lack of tension rather than a dull corners. This is especially annoying when it comes to cheaper, facyn scissors as they cannot be tightened unless you remove the rivet and replace it with something that can be tightened. The packaging industry have the vast majority of the aluminium foil market. Since the foil is nearly impermeable to gases and water vapor, it’s used in many products – from foodstuffs to gifts. Foil can extend the life of products, it takes extremely little storage space, and it produces lower waste than others.

With all these positives, it’s evident why aluminum foil is somuch in demand. Some folks believe that wearing a tin foil hat will protect them from radio waves being beamed into their heads for purposes of mind control, and this is actually quite true. Aluminum is a metal, and blocks electromagnetic radiation to some extent. How much EM is blocked would depend on the thickness of the foil and the strength of the signal. Essentially, a tin foil hat is a Faraday cage, a metal enclosure that blocks EM. But because it only covers the top of your head, it wouldn’t be much good at blocking EM. Some would get in through non-covered areas. What people really should be looking for is a tin foil full piece set of armor that covers the body completely. You’ll look pretty foolish, but it’s better than being mind-controlled by the government.

Aluminium foil finds a variety of uses in Indian kitchens and industries as well. But in this article, we’ll stick to its household applications only. People use aluminium foil for food storage, to cover baking surfaces and to wrap foods, such as meats, to prevent them from losing moisture while cooking. Food covered with a sheet of aluminium foil remains warm and fresh for a longer period of time. That is why Indian mothers cover their children’s tiffin snack with Aluminium foils. So that it remains warm and soft till their lunchtime. But, in the last few years, there has been ever-growing suspicion about the use of Aluminium foil on food items.

The product is getting a pad press for quite a long time now. So let’s find out what’s really
going on with the product. But before we talk about Aluminium foil, we need to know the role of aluminium as a mineral in our body. Aluminium is one of the most important minerals for the our body’s growth. Several body functions are closely linked to the amount of Al+ present in our body. In fact, it’s naturally occurring in most foods, including fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, grains and dairy products. Some foods, such as tea leaves, mushrooms, spinach and radishes, are also more likely to absorb and accumulate
aluminium than other foods.

However, too much aluminium content in the body can lead to many problems. Research suggests that over-concentration of aluminium in the body can lead to Alzheimer’s. If Aluminium content is present in more than the needed amount, it can lead to loss of brain cells and a significant reduction in the brain function. This is the reason for the growing suspicion of every product that is made from aluminium. Especially, the aluminium
foil.

As a matter of fact, Aluminum foil isn’t considered dangerous, but it can increase the aluminium content of your diet by a small amount. People who use aluminium foil on a daily basis are at a greater risk of these health issues.

If you use an aluminium sheet for covering leftover food every day, packing your children’s tiffin and for keeping your food warmer for a longer time, then you need a step back and think. Having said that, not everything that is said about aluminium foil in the market is true. There’s a lot of disinformation and misinformation attached to this issue.

As we have pointed out earlier in the article the disadvantages related to the use of aluminium foil are largely exaggerated. According to research, the amount of aluminium that foil contributes to your diet is likely insignificant. As you are probably eating far below the amount of aluminium that is considered safe, removing aluminium foil from your cooking shouldn’t be necessary. But, you should definitely try to
minimise its use in your kitchen.
