President Joe Biden and New PM Rishi Sunak discusses strong ties between two countries

The newly elected Prime Minister of United Kingdom– Rishi Sunak and President of United States-Joe Biden discussed about how to “handle the difficulties posed by China” as well as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Sunak’s appointment was previously described as “quite astonishing, a major milestone” by Biden.

In a Tuesday conversation with newly-appointed British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, US President Joe Biden reiterated the “special partnership” between the two countries.

Along with this, the UK “remains America’s closest partner,” Biden informed the British Prime Minister during a phone chat.

After meeting King Charles at Buckingham Palace, Sunak, 42, was formally chosen as the country’s prime minister. After Liz Truss’ 49-day tenure as his predecessor, he is taking over an economy that is in crisis and facing political unrest.

The two leaders discussed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the White House said in a statement, and “agreed on the need of working together to help Ukraine and hold Russia responsible for its actions.”

Additionally, Sunak and Biden talked about how to “handle the problems faced by China.” Beijing and Washington view one another as rivals in the geopolitical and economic spheres.

The subject of Northern Ireland and the two leaders’ adherence to the Good Friday Agreement were other topics of conversation.

On Monday, the US president called Sunak’s selection as Britain’s first non-white prime minister “quite astonishing, a historic milestone”.

Separately, President Biden telephoned Giorgia Meloni, who was just named prime minister of Italy, on Tuesday. According to the White House, the two talked about their determination to keep helping Ukraine.

Since World War II, the Meloni administration has been Italy’s most right-wing leader. NATO members have expressed alarm over Russia’s previous tight relations with two of its alliance partners.

Furthermore, Meloni declared that she was open to cooperating with Sunak and his government due to their “common ideals of freedom and democracy” in the meantime.
