United States: A man from South Africa named Hardi Yakubu stated people around the world admire the sheer power that the United States of America wields over different aspects of world geopolitics. Many Africans don’t realize that the power of the United States of America is inherent in the first word in its name, “UNITED”.
In unity lies strength. The USA of today is the creation of the unity of 50 different states of varying sizes, each of the states in this map was a separate state – 50 different states that have come together to form the United States of America.
North America is a continent just as Africa is a continent, but some states, 50 of them, came together to form the United States of America, making the one entity that resulted from this unity the most powerful military, economic, and geopolitical country in the world with influence across every sector.
Along with this, people may question what the United States uses its power and dominance for, and we may have serious disagreements with its foreign policy in particular, but everyone cannot deny that it wields this much power. And where did that power come from? It came from UNITY.
The African elders say that “a house separated against itself cannot stand” and that “united we stand, divided we fall”. Therefore, when everyone talks about African unity, everyone is not talking about some random fanciful impractical idea.
People are talking about the union of 55 states to form one African nation that will enable us to obtain the power necessary to protect ourselves from being dominated, exploited, disrespected, etc., by combining individual strengths as well as working together as one instead of competing against one another us different weak entities. In addition, African unity is not an end in as well as of itself.
It is a means to an end, the end being this; the building of a powerful, prosperous Africa for all Africans, wherever they may live. To this end, it is not one of the options that we have. It is the ONLY OPTION.
